What is Next for Arbitrum Layer-3 Gaming Network After XAI Token Launch?
Xai, a gaming network built atop the Ethereum scaling solution Arbitrum, started 2024 on a high, launching its token, XAI, via an airdrop to early supporters. Last week, the project announced that popular NFT gaming studio Laguna Games had picked Xai as the ideal host of its game Crypto Unicorns.
So, what is next for Xai? More crypto-powered games, of course!
On Monday, Tobias Batton, the co-founder of Ex Populus, a game studio with close relations with the Xai Foundation, said they will release several games on the Xai blockchain over the coming months. According to Batton, the first Ex Populus game to launch is known as Final Form.
The game will be powered by NFT cards, initially launched on Solana through a bridge to the Arbitrum blockchain. Batton said the game is now playable, but the Ex Populus team plans to move it into a “polish phase.” He expects Final Form to launch in April.
Ex Populus LAMOverse Game to Launch on Xai
Another game to be released by Ex Populus on the Xai blockchain is LAMOverse. The game features cartoonish environments and is tied to LAMO toys, according to gaming influencers Dr Disrespect and Ninja.
LAMOverse will launch a few months after Final Form’s debut. Batton says the game is also playable but needs some final touches.
When a decrypt journalist asked why Ex-Populus chose Xai, Batton responded that his team had spent significant time exploring Ethereum scaling solutions like Immutable X, Polygon, and Arbitrum, but they all had trade-offs, which made the game studio not commit to any of them.
Ultimately, Offchain Labs, the Arbitrum developer, proposed creating a custom gaming network to meet Ex Populus’ specific needs while laying a foundation for other game studios. And that is where Xai emerged.
Ex Populus contributed to building the Xai network. The game studio developed software used to power the Sentry Nodes, which early users bought to support the layer-3 blockchain. Moreover, Ex Populus markets Xai to other game studios and says it is willing to help them onboard to the network when they are ready.
Laguna Games Set to Migrate the Crypto Unicorns Game to Xai
One of the game studios looking to join Ex Populus on Xai is Laguna Games. Last week, the gaming company said it will migrate its popular game Crypto Unicorns from the Polygon blockchain to Xai later this year.
Since the launch of the XAI token, Batton claims that several studios have reached out in an attempt to adopt the Xai ecosystem for their gaming projects.
Ex Populus Aspires to be Like Valve
Meanwhile, the founder of Ex Populus says his company does not intend to be a regular game studio. Instead, it aims to be Valve’s Web3 version. For starters, Valve is a gaming powerhouse known for creating iconic games such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, and Portal. Moreover, it runs the famous Stream PC gaming store.
As Ex Populus seeks to be a crypto-based Valve, it faces several challenges on the way. The game studio must convince Web2 gamers why playing NFT-powered games is beneficial. In recent months, most of these gamers have called out traditional game studios that have tried integrating NFTs into their games.
Nonetheless, games built on Xai are likely to witness massive adoption, given that the network eliminates all the complexities associated with handling NFTs and Web3 wallets. Additionally, players will be able to play games without paying for gas fees.
Xai Promises Zero Complexities for Traditional Gamers
So, how has Xai removed the complexities associated with blockchain gaming? Well, according to Batton, all games will come with wallets, which Xai’s team will manage, so traditional gamers won’t have to worry about dealing with Web3 wallets. However, there will be an option for experienced crypto gamers to connect a self-custody wallet to the games.
The Xai team has been busy over the past few months. Last year, the team conducted the Sentry Node sale, generating over $30 million. Earlier this month, Xai launched the XAI airdrop, distributing free tokens worth $150 million.
