World Economic Forum Warns of AI and Quantum Computing Posing Global Risks

The World Economic Forum (WEF) publication warns that artificial intelligence could adversely impact healthcare, content integrity and job markets.

The 19th edition of WEF’s Global Risks Report considers artificial intelligence (AI) to present a new set of risks. The publication captured AI as the newly discovered worldwide threat.

The publication tracks the risks posing the world’s most severe impact besides extreme climate change, human migration, and geopolitical power shifts. The report captures technological acceleration as posing risks to the entire world. A notable addition to the 2024 edition is the predominant negative outlook regarding the risks that are predicted to worsen in the coming decade.

Artificial intelligence and technology surface within the report, particularly as the edition discusses societal polarization. The recent edition saw societal polarization ascend to rank third in risk and ninth in long-term threats.

The WEF report warns of the need to check technological risks and polarization growth, which is bound to pressure the world.

AI Harbors Diverse Implications

The WEF publication delved into the diverse implications that AI poses across the board. The report decried that AI could bring inequality in healthcare besides the risk of unethical data usage.

In particular, the WEF report pointed to a potential bias in AI utilization in medical research and development to favor wealthier populations.

The WEF authors warned that wealthy populations could leverage their resources to access the new healthcare solutions that induce early diagnosis. The report indicates that the wealthy can afford to access medical research and development, echoing the criticism levied on billionaire leaders during the longevity moment.

The report acknowledges the presence of criminal actors already launching the harvest attacks identified as stores now to decrypt later. The criminal actors anticipate the emergence of cryptographically significant computers.

The WEF report decries the emergence of deepfakes following the explosive growth realized by AI-generated content. Deepfakes pose a formidable challenge considering their discerning attribute where fiction echoes facts.

Deepfakes are aiding misinformation and disinformation, given the AI-powered capability to manipulate, fabricate content, and create imposters. The WEF report classifies deepfakes as global risks, given their capability to shift public opinion and sow distrust in facts and authority.

AI Tops Global Leaders Concerns

The explosive growth realized by AI has triggered an intense debate among global leaders and tech executives. The debate took a critical turn, promoting 29 countries and the European Union (UN) to initiate an international declaration on AI safety. The declaration underscores the urgency for the global leaders to manage the emerging technology.

The UK took a unique path, declaring it would not prioritize regulating AI. The move is tied toward prioritizing innovation as opposed to imposing restrictions.

The UK is entangled in a contradictory position following the recent announcement that it opened investigations targeting the ChatGPT developer OpenAI, alleging violation of antitrust regulations

The WEF report echoes the warning conveyed by the UN Secretary-General António Guterres over the risk of concentrated technological power. He warned in 2023 that AI expertise appears to be concentrated in a few companies and countries, deepening global inequalities.
