Sports NFTs have become an in-thing with NFT marketplaces like Sorare and NBA Top Shots garnering massive sales and trading volume since the start of 2021. This has prompted a partnership between the Barcelona and Argentine footballer, Lionel Messi and DeFi cum NFT platform, Ethernity Chain. The project entitled, ‘The Messiverse’ will see the football star release three NFT collectibles depicting his precious moments.
Sales for “The Messiverse’ collectibles will begin by August 20 and fans of Messi will be able to access them via Ethernity Chain’s NFT marketplace. Australian digital artist Bosslogic is bringing his expertise and experience to the NFT collectibles as he will be handling the project. He once collaborated with film and entertainment franchise, Marvel on the ‘Avengers’ project
The Messiverse NFT Collectibles
As earlier mentioned, the project will feature three NFT collectibles, which will be due for release by mid-August. According to reports, a fourth collectible would come into picture later in August, courtesy of the creative outfit, Impossible Brief.
The first collectible depicts Lionel Messi in an embellished metallic suit similar to that worn by Marvel character, Iron man. This NFT piece is titled, ‘Man From the Future.’ According to Bosslogic, the piece is inspired by the notion that the age-long game of soccer would become cyber, while representing the footballer’s future cyber form. Moreover, the piece has a cyberpunk style to it.
Messi’s second NFT piece represents him as the Greek god, Atlas, who according to Greek legend, was literally saddled with the weight of the entire universe. In view of this, the collectible is entitled ‘Worth the Weight.’ Accordingly, Messi is represented in the piece as one who has shouldered the responsibility of leading both his club and national teams to victory on many occasions.
The last piece scheduled for mid-August is regarded as ” The King Piece” and casts Messi in the mould of a king, synonymous to the features of the popular board game, Chess. Here, he is surrounded by other pieces whose fate, in line with the narrative, he determines. Bringing it to the real world, Messi is regarded as a king on the field of play and determines the fate of opposition teams in a way.
Also, the collectible also shows Messi lifting the treasured award, Ballon d’Or which he has unsurprisingly clinched for the sixth time. A seventh may likely be in the picture considering his performance at the Copa America 2020 games, in which his national team, Argentina emerged as the winner. The fourth collectible is reported to have been licensed by the football star himself and organisers of the Copa America tournament.
