A district in Japan, Edogawa ward, plans to adopt the metaverse technology to uphold the inclusivity of teenagers and youths battling social exclusion. A report issued by the Edogawa ward on February 19 revealed plans for the community to engage in regular dialogues to seek effective inclusivity approaches for individuals with social reclusion challenges.
The Edogawa community intends to explore the metaverse space to develop a suitable solution for socially excluded individuals into society.
Metaverse Technology Used to Solve Social Reclusion Problems
The increase in young people living with social reclusion hikikomori necessitated the Edogawa community to pursue multiple mechanisms for improving inclusivity and launching reunion programs.
The Edogawa community announced on February 19 to launch an interactive session with individuals with reclusion conditions through online and offline platforms.
The report revealed the Edogawa ward administrators plan to host additional six events this year for people with hikikomori. The community has appointed Kazaku Hikikikomori, a Japanese non-governmental organization, to lead the upcoming social reclusion campaigns. The NGO has more than 80 stakeholders, of which 50 are from the metaverse sector, while the remaining 30 are from different sectors in the digital space.
Meanwhile, the event facilitator is tasked to develop a metaverse platform where the participant from remote places can attend the online meeting. The main advantage of metaverse technology is the security feature that protects user personal information from exploitation.
The February 19 report revealed that the metaverse technology will protect user interest during reclusion campaigns.
High Number of Hikikomori Cases in Japan
A recent survey conducted by Saito Tamaki revealed that Japan has over 1.15 million people living in social reclusion. Tamaki forecasted that the number would reach 2 million this year.
Notably, Japan has prioritized improving the inclusion of persons with hikikomori in society. The hikikomori is a social problem where individuals exclude themselves from society, exposing their families to emotional distress and financial crisis.
The Edogawa ward administrators proposed the adoption of metaverse technology to reduce hikikomori cases. The community argued that exploring the metaverse space will improve the social lives of persons with hikikomori.
Exploring Metaverse Space
Beyond this, Edogawa residents with the hikikomori condition was 9096 in 2021, and the number continues to increase. The rise of hikikomori cases in Edogawa compelled Ward Mayor Takeshi Saito to prioritize integrating metaverse technology.
In his recent addresses, Saito revealed plans to engage hikikomori victims in Edogawa in activities that will boost their interactions with other people.
Nonetheless, Edogawa’s social inclusion efforts correspond to an event held in Toda town last year to minimize school absenteeism. Residents in Toda town embraced metaverse technology to develop online classes for hikikomori victims. Toda’s approach aimed at preparing the socially reclusive individual with abilities to cope with school life and reduce cases of absenteeism.
