The word “metaverse” get a place among the prominent three contenders for the Word of the Year (WOTY) competition conducted by Oxford University Press (OUP) – the Oxford English Dictionary’s publisher. The competition’s launch was formally declared by the OUP between the top three words on the 22nd of November this year. This is considered to be the initial time when the common masses are allowed to be a part of the voting in this competition.

The word “Metaverse” will contest the words “Goblin Mode” and “#IStandWith”. The term originated in 1991 and Oxford English Dictionary recorded it in 1992 citing its use in Snow Crash (a science fiction novel authored by Neil Stephenson, as per the video. According to Oxford, the usage of the term widened in October this year in comparison with the previous year.

The video mentioned that additional work and lifestyle-related operations occurring in virtual reality atmospheres may cause the development of more discussions over the feasibility and ethics of the future of the online world. In the case of the rest of the 2 WOTY candidates, “Goblin Mode” arose as a concept being widely used after the COVID-19 lockdown denoting the state where one prefers doing things according to desires and refuses to return to normalcy.

While commenting on the basis for selecting the respective phrases, OUP disclosed that the firm operated an analysis over a data system of language to get these three in particular. The people who want to vote for any of these candidates must go to the website of Oxford Language. Up till now, the casting of more than 237,000 votes has been effectively completed and the voting will close on the 2nd of December.

The time for the winning announcement has not been disclosed by Oxford. A Twitter poll conducted by OUP indicates that sixty-three percent of 929 people voted in favor of Goblin Mode while “#IStandWith” and “metaverse” got 15% and 22% votes respectively.

Irrespective of the findings of the voting, the place of the metaverse is anticipated to occupy an important place in the industry shortly. A recent report published by McKinsey (an international consulting platform) estimated that the worth of metaverse-related technologies would potentially touch $5T by 2030.
