Huawei, the China-based telecom company, does not believe the present telecommunication infrastructure of today can support the metaverse. According to Huawei, 5G and 6G networks are needed if individuals want to use the metaverse seamlessly.

Huawei Believes Technology Must Improve To Support The Metaverse

On December 20th, Abhinav Purohit, Huawei’s chief expert on strategy and business consulting for the Middle East, commented on the future of the metaverse. In a blog series, the executive evaluates the present state of telecom technology globally.

According to Purohit, the metaverse is a virtual shared space for everyone. The Huawei executive added that this shared space would allow individuals from various parts of the world to enjoy an interactive and engaging experience.

In addition, these virtual experiences will be a replica of what is present in the physical world. Also, Purohit argued that the metaverse is linked to Web3 development.

He stated that NFTs and crypto would power the future economies in the metaverse. Therefore, streaming quality, download speeds, metaverse hardware, and mobile devices must improve to support such systems.

“Delivering such interactive and engaging experience will need great innovation in various fields like remote and local real-time rendering, edge computing, and video compression,” he added.

Also, he stated that significant changes are needed in the telecom sector if it must support nascent technology. Some areas that need change include network optimizations and cellular standards. It is also crucial for tech firms to improve latency between mobile networks and devices.

According to Purohit, there are vital issues that would stop the metaverse. They include network throughput (quality experience), latency (how fast the network is), and symmetric bandwidth (data transfer speed).

Additionally, the executive called for the global adoption of 5G technology. He believes this will improve network bandwidth and reduce network latency and contention.

The Need For Increased 5G Adoption

Interestingly, Purohit believes the 6G technology will take things further.

Meanwhile, reports state that a 5G network can attain a speed of 1,000 MBps (megabytes per second). This is faster compared to the average Internet speed in the US, which is 119.03 MBps.

Apart from metaverse development, there is also a push for technological advancements. Telecom giants are working to ensure 5G connectivity spreads to various parts of the world.

According to reports from GSA (the Global mobile Suppliers Association), as of August, over 501 operators spread across 153 nations and regions have invested in 5G.

Furthermore, the GSA’s report added that 222 of the 501 operators had released 5G connectivity in 89 nations. However, 5G functionality is not yet available in all parts of the world.

Meanwhile, it is uncertain if users can access the metaverse using 5G technology. Moreover, telecom firms and phone manufacturers are already working on 6G networks. Hence, users can use 6G networks to access the metaverse.
