Kaspersky Report: Crypto Phishing Attacks have Increased by 40% in One Year

Kaspersky is a cybersecurity analytics and anti-virus manufacturing firm. The company also conducts research and publishes new studies regularly. The latest issue of Kaspersky Analytics informs that there were more than 5 million phishing attacks recorded last year.

The same number was limited to 3.5 million incidents happening during 2021. All these attacks were made on cryptocurrency wallets. It seems that as the value and demand of cryptocurrencies are increasing, more hackers are taking an interest in digital custodian services.

The new trend among hackers is to get into crypto-related malware. So much so that the official counts of traditional banking malware have dropped while phishing viruses are on the rise.

The Kaspersky report maintained that during the last year, crypto phishing attacks raised by 40%. The firm also relayed that the total reported cases of crypto phishing attacks are around 5,040,520 in total, with around 3,596,437 such attacks happening within 2021.

Working Mechanism of Phishing Attacks

Hackers create fake websites to reach out to their victims. They generate communication channels that mimic real-life websites or commercial enterprises. From there, the users are prompted to share their details, such as private keys.

As soon as a new user enters their private key, the hackers acquire it and exploit it to break into the crypto wallets of their victims. The firm is not sure whether the trend is going to continue in 2023 at the same pace as last year.

A public notification on the matter was issued by Trezor. Trezor is a hardware wallet development company that issued an official notification for its users against hackers who were tricking crypto investors into installing their recovery phrase on a fake Trezor site.

Kaspersky report also informs that 1 in 7 has reported getting hit by a crypto phishing attack. Typically, these attacks are perpetrated in the form of free giveaways on the digital wallets present on the fake phishing wallets.

The report also noted that the threat actors have continued to change their strategies to keep up with the defensive techniques of their targets.

Arbitrum project users have recently uncovered a new type of phishing link making rounds on their official Discord server. These reports have notified that hackers have been able to invade the Discord account for Arbitrum developers.

From there they were able to make a fake announcement and publish a new phishing link without the knowledge of other community members. This news was also shared by CertiK Alert on Twitter in a recent update on the matter.

The tweet notified the users and Arbitrum community investors that these developments have resulted in the creation of a new spiked link making rounds on their Discord.
